Communication: is arguably the most important aspect of the human existence. It is what sets us apart from any other species on the planet. Although anyone can argue that dogs, cats, monkeys, and other intelligent animals have the capabilities to communicate with one another, certainly not to the extent that human beings do. Our forms of communication and relaying messages are so diverse too: we can convey a mood with a look, give an attitude with the eyes, voice an attitude with a certain timbre, or simply have some choice words to communicate our message. This only applies to personal, one on one communication though. As far as reaching a wide audience or from a great distance, we have audio and visual. These 2 are the rudimentary basis of all human interaction, and adapt wonderfully to their mediums. The wonders of technology have enabled us to take advantage of each of these styles.

Communication by hearing is always the first one people gravitate towards. Although our sense of hearing may not be as good as a trained dog’s, we have the ability to understand tones, pitches, and timbres very well. Some people think we should be rid of the polygraph machine, as any person can tell the nuances of the voice of a liar. When not being used to detect criminals, the voice is a strong creative tool as well. Songs are written by musicians with a certain message in mind, and then the words are thoughtfully crafted to fit this message. Then it is up to the listener to intercept the communication, and understand how it applies to them. Luckily though, the listener does not have to wait for their favorite group to come around and play live to hear their message. Technology has allowed these bands to simply record their songs and send them to the Internet. The Internet then allows many people to listen to it without the band even present.

Visual expression has also been a staple of man’s communication techniques. As humans, we have always been an overwhelmingly visual species. Our caveman ancestors have instilled in us this need for survival. It is a strange phenomenon: before you cross the street, you feel compelled to look both ways. When not serving as a safety precaution, visual imagery has boomed with technology. When you used to have to read a clunky book to get a story, you can now read on a computer desktop. This eliminates the large burden, and still allows you to absorb the story. Mostly though, text has been used for people to speak online. Many people now use the social networking websites and communicate with their family through them. All of these interactions are text based, and always done on a large scale. Any little thing you type, all of your friends online can read.

These parts of communication are absolutely necessary for humans to spread their messages, in real life or online. The advantage with online and technology is that you can spread the message to many people at once. The web is usually a nice place, and useful for those wishing to communicate or find information, but it has a dark side as well. Online criminals called hackers often patrol the web, waiting for an unsuspecting user to come by. With futuristic tools and tactics, they have the ability to actually break into one’s computer. This leads to another downfall of the web; everything up there can simply be copied, pasted, edited, and posted somewhere else. This edit could be done with malicious intent, and suddenly you could find yourself the victim of online libel.

Not getting caught, that is why hackers are lured to their criminal deeds. They have an advantage over the average criminal, and scarily enough, they truly leave nothing behind. It is almost impossible to catch a hacker whether it is in the act or after the fact. Once they are in your PC, they can do pretty much anything. They can take files and use them to their advantage, or simply leave a virus. Suddenly enough, and with little knowledge, you could find yourself a victim of identity theft. Don’t fall victim to a common misconception: your virus protector is not enough to protect yourself. Be careful online; it can be a great tool, but dangerous as well.
