Hitler s most ruthless henchman, Dr. Joseph Goebbels, is a fiend to all who resist him. As the Minister of Propaganda for the Nazi party, he has absolute authority over Germany s newspapers, radio, film and theater. With this imposing power, Goebbels has Germany s most beautiful women at his beck and call, but he is obsessed with the lovely actress, Maria Brandt, who had humiliated him by rejecting his pathetic advances years earlier. After secretly orchestrating her incredibly successful film career in order to gain influence over her, he ruthlessly destroys that career and everything else she holds dear when she continues to spurn his twisted love. Filmed while Goebbels was alive and the war in Europe was still raging, The Enemy of Women is itself a sly Hollywood propaganda piece, and the darkly stylish melodrama has a strong ironic undertone as a result. By nesting the fictional tale of a young woman ravaged by the grotesque machinery of the Reich within the greatly simplified but generally factual story of Goebbels nefarious Nazi career, director Alfred Zeisler succeeds in giving the larger-than-life tableau of war-time Europe an intimately human scale. He is greatly aided in this effort by the outstanding shadows-and-light noir cinematography of John Alton, who won an Academy Award seven years later for his camerawork in An American in Paris. Starring: Paul Andor & Claudia Drake Directed by: Alfred Zeisler DVD Details: Run Time: 85 minutes Number of Discs: 1 Originally Released in 1944 Black & White No region encoding; For global distribution. A bigoted Texan, Lieutenant Michael Grayson (Van Johnson), is assigned to command the U. S. 442nd Regimental Combat Team during World War II. Learning that the regiment is composed entirely of Japanese-American volunteers, he immediately requests a transfer. Suspicious and distrustful of his troops, the Lieutenant finds it hard to believe that Japs are fit to be American soldiers. Denied his transfer, the unhappy commander and his regiment ship out to the raging battlefields of Europe. Go For Broke is the motto of the 442nd and the troops daring and bravery under fire prove it to be well-deserved. Lt. Grayson s prejudices gradually turn to respect and admiration as his heroic subordinates aquit themselves with valor and a clear determination to go above and beyond the call of duty. Taking on heavy casualties in carrying out its missions, the 442nd was one of the U. S. Army s most decorated infantry regiments during WWII. Many of the actual veterans of the celebrated fighting unit play themselves in Go For Broke. Appearing in more than 100 films during his long career, Van Johnson became one of America s top war film heroes during the 1940s and 1950s. Wary of drawing attention to Sunday Island, Jim refuses to let either pilot make radio contact with their respective combat units. With Lieutenant Alan Scott and Kurt Heimen essentially prisoners, Butler does his best to hide another secret that would make his home a prime asset for either side-the rich supply of oil on the island. Anna May Wong began her career in silent films and quickly came to the attention of Douglas Fairbanks, who cast her in a prominent role in The Thief of Baghdad. To escape type-casting after a series of concubine and slave girl roles, she went to Europe, where parts in film and on stage were better for the Chinese-American actress. Wong returned to the U. S. and continued to create strong portraits for directors Erich Von Stroheim, Nicholas Ray and Ross Hunter. Before passing away in Santa Monica, California in 1961, she appeared in numerous television shows and dramas, and was the first Chinese-American to star in her own series, The Gallery of Madame Liu-Tsong (1951).
